Do psychology researchers harm animals?

I'm working on completing my undergrad degree in Psychology and am def. planning on applying to grad school. I eventually want to attend Central Washington University or Emory in order to do research with apes and chimps. Eventually I would want to expand my research to rats and so on. I just wanted to know if researchers harm animals? Would I be required to do inhumane things to animals for the sake of research?
