According to the novel Dracula, written by Bram Stoker in 1897, what is a vampire? (not dracula but a vampire)?
A vampire according to the book is a human bitten by another vampire and thus made totally dependant on human blood. They can't go in the sun (symbolism), and male vampires prey on beautiful females (more symbolism!).They turn into bats at night, and live in coffins at night. The only way to kill them is to find them in their coffin and shove a stake (basically what a wooden fence prong looks like when it's pulled out of the earth) into their chest where their heart would be. They are pale and bloodless, and usually aristocracy. Apparently, they can be warded off with garlic and a cross hung over entry ways and beds. It's not quite clear, but I don't think it's necessary for Bram Stoker vampires to drink blood, I think it's a choice they make whether to prey on somebody, after all the whole thing is a symbolism of aristocratic men seducing and ruining beautiful young women. I also think that the women turn into vampires too when they are drained.
